On 28 April 2026, the Algerian partner @U.SKIKDA successfully organized the third field demo day of the @WATERMELLON project (@PRIMA Section 1) at the Setif demonstration site.
The event gathered 38 participants, including 18 stakeholders involved in the project in Algeria, 18 students from the @University of Skikda, 3 academics and researchers, and 2 policymakers. Among the stakeholders were farmers, agricultural advisors, and seed producers, ensuring a diverse and practice-oriented exchange of knowledge.
The main objective of the demo day was to provide hands-on training and demonstrations on the production systems developed within the @WATERMELLON project. Participants engaged directly with the @U.SKIKDA team, who presented the principles and technical implementation of the water harvesting system. This included the flexible water tank, pumping system, and water collection point, highlighting their role in improving both crop and fish production systems.
A field demonstration focused on soil, water, and crop management practices for rotated winter forage crops with sorghum. Participants received detailed insights into soil moisture monitoring, irrigation strategies, and yield estimation under both irrigated and non-irrigated conditions.
Sorghum seeds were also distributed, alongside technical guidance on crop management and the irrigation schedule for the upcoming sowing planned for 15 May 2026.
