Implementation of a Water Harvesting System at the Setif Demonstration Site, Algeria

The University of Skikda (U. SKIKDA) has taken a significant step toward promoting climate-resilient agriculture with the successful installation of a Water Harvesting System (WHS) at the Setif demonstration site, completed in April as part of the WATERMELLON project.

The research team of the University of Skikda carried out the work in collaboration with farmers and an agricultural advisor from the Setif stakeholders’ network during the activities performed in the organized second field demo-day by the mentioned university.

What is the Water Havervesting System WHS ?

The WHS consists of a water flexible tank (WFT), a pumping system, an irrigation system, and a water collection point. The irrigation system is composed of two sprinkler irrigation kits, each including 20 sprinklers. The irrigation system will take water from water Tank to field crop plot located from 300 m from the Water tank position.

First Applications

The installed water tank was used for the first time to provide supplementary irrigation for winter forage crops (forage pea, oat, and oat–forage pea intercropping). Until now, the water harvesting system was used to ensure two complementary irrigarion for roted winter forage crops and than it will be used from 10 May to September to ensure full irrigation of Sorgho crop under contrasted roted systems.
