Over three exciting days, partners from ten Mediterranean countries came together in Alexandria to exchange ideas, share progress, and strengthen collaboration on sustainable water management and agriculture.
Hosted at the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications (SRTA-City), the meeting opened with a warm welcome from Prof. Mona Mahmoud Abd El-Latif, SRTA-City Director, who highlighted the power of innovation and cooperation in tackling extreme drought challenges across the region.
The first day kicked off with a field visit showcasing cutting-edge irrigation systems. Participants explored an advanced expansion tank irrigation system with fertigation technology for quinoa and Opuntia crops. The system naturally enriches water with nutrients, reducing the need for fertilizers and promoting sustainability, a perfect example of innovation in action.
On day two, partners presented their case studies on water harvesting and cropping systems adapted to diverse Mediterranean regions. Discussions focused on farmer engagement strategies and the development of novel value chains. Updates on each country’s activities fostered a cooperative atmosphere and reinforced the partners’ commitment to tackling the region’s pressing agricultural challenges.
The meeting concluded with a synergy-building session, featuring presentations from Prof. Marta Vasconcelos (NUSTALGIC) and Prof. Vassilis Aschonitis (VENUS), which paved the way for joint initiatives within the framework of the PRIMA program to amplify project impact and reach wider audiences.
Together, Mediterranean partners are turning challenges into opportunities for innovation, resilience, and sustainable agriculture.
